Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Hull & East Yorkshire Branch NEWS RELEASE

Enthusiastic Managers are Chosen for Seasonal Award

Issued 13th June 2006

Glyn & Alan Clarke, enthusiastic managers of the Green Dragon in Beverley, have been chosen to receive a recognition award for “Continuing Commitment to Quality Real Ale”.

The seasonal ‘Pub Mirror Awards’ are currently being used to recognise those licensees in the Hull and East Yorkshire area who have demonstrated a "Continuing Commitment to Quality Real Ale" at a time when they are under great pressure to remove distinctive, tasty real ale and replace it with ‘easily kept’ heavily advertised, bland tasting nitro-keg beers. The award therefore, also acknowledges those licensees who practise the specialised art of cellermanship. This is because real ale requires expertise to prepare and maintain it in good condition whereas nitro-keg beer only requires connecting to a mixed-gas cylinder before selling.

Glyn & Alan became managers of the Green Dragon in November 1995. It was due to undergo a major refurbishment and that was significant factor in their decision to take the pub. They were previously at The Elms in Shareshill (Staffordshire) for two years. They have a wealth of experience and have always worked for the same company – Mitchells & Butlers. Glyn is a fully qualified chef and therefore ensures that the food offered at the pub is of the highest quality.

Four guest beers are always available and they are obtained from small independent breweries from near and far. They are usually selected from breweries that they have had past experience with, but sometimes from unknown breweries if they just happen to ring at the right time. Glyn & Alan strongly believe in supporting the small brewers and the general revival of real ale.

The pub is prominently situated on Saturday Market and the opening hours are 11-11 Monday-Wednesday; 11-12 Thursday-Saturday; 12-10.30 Sunday.

The ‘Summer 2006’ award will be presented to Glyn & Alan by CAMRA Branch Chairman, Alan Canvess on Sunday 18th June 2006 at 7.30 pm. A large gathering of the pub’s regular customers and CAMRA members are expected to attend the presentation. Amongst them will be active member Steve Purdie who nominated Glyn & Alan for the award, stating “They offer a great choice of real ales and promote them so enthusiastically to customers of all ages”.
