Russell & Sarah Jeffery Warburton, owners of the Wellington Inn in Lund, have been chosen to receive a recognition award for “Continuing Commitment to Quality Real Ale”.
The seasonal ‘Pub Mirror Awards’ are currently being used to recognise those licensees in the Hull and East Yorkshire area who have demonstrated a "Continuing Commitment to Quality Real Ale" at a time when they are under great pressure to remove distinctive, tasty real ale and replace it with ‘easily kept’ heavily advertised, bland tasting nitro-keg beers. The award therefore, also acknowledges those licensees who practise the specialised art of cellermanship. This is because real ale requires expertise to prepare and maintain it in good condition whereas nitro-keg beer only requires connecting to a mixed-gas cylinder before selling.
Black Sheep Best Bitter, John Smith’s Bitter and Taylor Landlord are the three regular beers that are available and there is always one or two regularly changing guest beers.
The pub is featured in CAMRA’s new 2007 Good Beer Guide and is described as: Enjoying a prime location on the green in this award-wining Wolds village. Most of its trade comes from the local farming community. The present owners purchased the pub from Mansfield Brewery in 1995 and immediately renovated it. Features are the stone flagged floors, beamed ceilings and three real fires. This multi-roomed pub includes a no-smoking room, a games room and a candlelit restaurant serving evening meals, Tuesday-Saturday. Good quality food can be enjoyed at lunchtime from the bar menu and specials board.
The pub’s opening hours are 12-3 (not Mon) and 6.30-11.
The ‘Autumn 2006’ award will be presented to Russell & Sarah by CAMRA Branch Chairman, Alan Canvess this Saturday, 16th September 2006 at around 8.30 pm. A large gathering of the pub’s regular customers and CAMRA members are expected to attend the presentation. Amongst them will be John Heckford, CAMRA’s Pubs Officer for East Yorkshire, who nominated Russell & Sarah for the award, stating “Every time I visit the beer is very good and the owners and their staff always greet you with a welcoming smile.”
