Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Hull & East Yorkshire Branch NEWS RELEASE

OWNERS OF RIVERSIDE PUB TO RECEIVE SEASONAL AWARD

Issued 2nd July 2004

Eddie and Liz Payne, owners of The Hope & Anchor in Blacktoft have been chosen to receive the Summer 2004 ‘Pub Mirror Award’ for “Continuing Commitment to Quality Real Ale”.

The seasonal awards are currently being used to recognise those licensees in the Hull and East Yorkshire area who have demonstrated a "Continuing Commitment to Quality Real Ale" at a time when they are under great pressure to remove distinctive, tasty real ale and replace it with ‘easily kept’ heavily advertised, bland tasting nitro-keg beers. The award therefore, also acknowledges those licensees who practise the specialised art of cellermanship. This is because real ale requires expertise to prepare and maintain it in good condition whereas nitro-keg beer only requires connecting to a mixed-gas cylinder before selling.

Eddie & Liz purchased The Hope & Anchor about four and a half years ago after spending quite a few years looking after pubs for local licensees while they were away on holiday.

The pub is situated on the bank of the River Ouse, three and a half miles south of Gilberdyke station, and has picnic tables looking out across the river to the Blacktoft Sands bird sanctuary. It is on the Trans-Penine trail link and is very popular with walkers and cyclists. it is also frequented by seamen who tie up at the nearby jetty.

Up to four real ales are available at the pub with John Smith’s Bitter and Mansfield Mild being offered regularly alongside two changing guest beers produced by Britain’s small independent breweries.

The pubs opening hours are: Monday and Tuesday 4-11; Wednesday to Saturday 12-11 and Sunday 12-10.30.

The award will be presented to Eddie and Liz by CAMRA Branch Chairman, Alan Canvess on Saturday, 3rd July at around 9.00 p.m. A large gathering of the pub’s regular customers are expected to witness the presentation, together with thirty CAMRA members who will be calling in during their survey trip of pubs in the area.
