Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Hull & East Yorkshire Branch NEWS RELEASE

Brew Pub is Voted Village Pub of the Year 2004

Issued 15th December 2004

The Goodmanham Arms, Goodmanham, has been named 'Village Pub of the Year 2004' by the Hull & East Yorkshire Branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale.

Members voted for their Village / Rural Pub of the Year 2004 at the December branch meeting after carefully considering the following criteria: Community Focus, Atmosphere, Campaigning, Quality of Beer, Style/Decor, Service and Welcome; Value for Money.

For the pub to be eligible for the competition the licensee had to be present since the 1st January 2004. Peter Southcott has been in the pub since he purchased it on the 4th July 2003. When he heard that his local was up for sale he decided to have a go rather than let it close.

The pub is situated on the Main Street and is close to the Wolds Way. It stands opposite the church where it is said that King Edwin was converted to Christianity in 627. It is described in the 2005 CAMRA Good Beer Guide as: "Popular inn, built in the early 20th century, the fireplace in the main bar and the chequered tile floors are period features."

The pub is open 4-11 Monday-Friday, 12-11 Saturday and 12-10.30 on a Sunday. Theakston's Best Bitter is the regular beer available alongside four beers that are brewed on the site. Yes, as well as running the pub Peter also brews beer in a micro-brewery just across the car park. The previous owner gave him a few lessons and then he received some guidance from Phil Ellis (Fugelstow Brewery - Fulstow) and Susan Simpson (Brown Cow Brewery - Selby).

The pub hosts live music on the 1st Thursday of every month when a group of local musicians gather to play arcordions and guitars in an acoustic jam session. The pub does not do food but welcomes well-behaved dogs. Peter is ably assisted in the pub by his hard working staff.

The Crooked Billet at Ryehill was runner-up in the competition and the Chestnut Horse at Kelk finished third.

The 'Village Pub of the Year Award 2004' will be presented to Peter on Saturday 22nd January at around 8.30 p.m. in front of a number of CAMRA members and the pub's regulars.
