ALEX & TINA CRAIG
The Whalebone, Hull
Alex & Tina Craig at The Whalebone in Hull were chosen to receive the Spring 2004 award. They had been nominated by CAMRA stalwart Paul Ashton.
They purchased the pub, situated by the high flags on Wincolmlee, in November 2003 and immediately introduced a choice of 5 real ales from independent breweries and 2 real ciders.
Since then Alex has added a micro-brewery where he produces Neck Oil (ABV 3.9%) on a regular basis and is excellent value at £1.25 a pint in the pub. Other 'specials' have also been brewed including Diana Mild (3.3%), Truelove Porter (4.7%); Moby Dick Strong Ale (8%) and Full Ship (8.5%).
Alex and Tina are well known to the discerning drinkers in the area. They re-opened and ran the King Billy on Market Place in Hull from March 1992 to July 1993. The then basic two-roomer was extremely popular, offering 10 real ales in a relaxed atmosphere. It deservedly won our 'Pub of the Year Award 1992'.
The presentation was made to Alex and Tina on Saturday 11th April at around 8.30p.m. A large gathering of regulars and CAMRA members were in attendance.
